Guest Post: Carolyn of Full on Fit

I have a treat today!  Carolyn contacted me and offered to do a guest post.  I felt so special!  Her blog focuses on the importance of a healthy diet and plenty of exercise.  I said I would be happy to let her do a guest post! The topic she chose is something that is very important to me...I used to work for a program where my job was to teach children and adults about exercise and how to eat healthy on a budget.
Joey and I try to eat healthy and make smart choices.  I cook dinner every night & pack his lunch almost every day.  That right there saves a ton of calories!  My main form of activity comes from walking, the occasional workout video...and oh something called chasing a very mobile child around all day ;)

Here is what Carolyn has to say about ...

How to Promote Healthy Habits as a Family

With a new year comes all of the healthy weight loss resolutions that many of us make. It's a new start, so it’s easy to jump on the bandwagon, join a gym and watch everything that we eat on a daily basis. Now that April is upon us, people who made those resolutions are starting to slack off because they are losing hope and motivation. What’s more, it has become critical that family health be given a serious consideration. With the rates of childhood obesity tripling in the last 3 years, family nutrition and exercise are of extreme importance. Not too long ago, one of my own cousins was diagnosed with obesity and Type 2 Diabetes, which has pushed my own family into altering our lifestyles to incorporate healthier habits.

In fact, starting over with your weight loss and fitness goals can be easy now because spring and summer are just around the corner!  If you want to lose a few pounds or just tone up your body, this is a great time to start because you still have a few months before hitting the beach. There is also no better way to workout and get fit than by doing so as a family, since eating and living healthier can actually be easier if you have people who are making changes alongside you.

Regular Exercises to Do with the Family

Yoga
Yoga is very popular because it is an ideal exercise for people of all ages and body types. Even women who are expecting can do light yoga stretches to help ease pains and strains. As a family, you can either do yoga in your living room while watching an exercise DVD or you might want to think about joining a nearby class that offers it. Yoga has a multitude of benefits – orthopedic surgeons from St. Joseph’s Orthopedic Center explain how practicing yoga can increase one’s balance, flexibility, posture, strength, and their bone and joint health – all great benefits for everyone in your family!

Run or Jog
Running and jogging, though a high-impact sport, is incredibly beneficial to anyone who is looking to rev up his or her metabolism and get in shape. Make it a habit of your family's to go to the local park once a week to run or jog laps. You will find that this helps you all to bond a little better while getting some good quality exercise.

Hit the Hiking Trails
Hiking is yet another wonderful exercise that can benefit you and your loved ones tremendously. Find a trail locally and pack everything you will need for the whole day. Some hiking trails are short and others will take hours to complete from start to finish. You choose which type of trail to take depending on fitness level, and you can bring a healthy picnic with you to stop and eat along the way!

Take a Camping Trip
Going camping is similar to hiking because you can be in the great outdoors getting some clean, fresh air. Camping may not seem like an active hobby, but it truly is. Gathering wood for a fire and setting up a tent are all activities that can get you sweating and having a lot of fun.

Walk the Dogs
Make it a habit of yours to walk the dog with your family every single day. You might find that taking a stroll after dinner each night is a great way to burn off some calories from your meal and spend time with your loved ones. You might even want to make it a habit to spend Saturday mornings taking the family dog to the local park for a walk.

Play in the Backyard
If you have a big backyard, use it to your advantage! Just go out there and play Tag or just set up some sports equipment and have fun. Encourage kids to play outside every day if the weather permits – they’ll get great exercise, and will learn to entertain themselves instead of being constantly entertained by TV and computers.

Keep Yourself Energized
Keeping yourself energized before and after a workout is very important. There are so many pre-workout and post-workout snacks and recipes available out there that it can be confusing to know what you should be eating.

In general, protein is a wonderful thing to have before and after a workout. Protein is often loaded with calories, which provide the body with the energy it needs. Protein also helps to rebuild muscles after an intense workout.

There are a few ways for you to get protein into your body before and after a workout. Bananas and peanut butter are both a wonderful source of protein, as well as plain yogurt. What you could try doing is adding bananas, peanut butter, plain yogurt and a little unsweetened cocoa powder to a blender that is full of ice. Blend this mixture until it's smooth and you have a delicious sweet, chocolate-y smoothie that will give you and the family a lot of energy for that upcoming workout and tastes delicious!

No matter what type of exercise you try with the family, the key is to make working out a habit that sticks. You can do it!
